    Focus Your Plan

    By admin | October 24, 2007

Scope.jpgI do not talk about “personal development” very much. Mostly because the advice puts us in the center of the universe which is a place we don’t belong. I like a lot the principles that it possesses (stop being lazy, read, etc.). But I always have to take it a step further and know the root for my actions.

For instance, if you are trying to wake up earlier every morning I have to have a reason for it (not just trying to be a better person). The deeper root reason for this is may be because you want to be more productive in the earlier hours so you can spend more time with your family at night time.

Or perhaps you are reading non-fiction books that contain principles to improve in a certain area (leadership, finances, etc.) I personally try to read everything I can on the area of personal finances because I am passionate about helping others with their finances. By absorbing more information I am able to be a better teacher.

This brings me to my point that I am trying to make. I want you to understand why you are doing what you do. If you are budgeting or cleaning up a mess that might exist in your finances I want you to know why you are doing it. I want you to understand your goals.

We all have goals, some of us may not have put them down on paper yet. Some examples of goals are to retire early, pay off your home, stop living paycheck to paycheck, pay for your kid’s college, etc. Personally my overarching “financial” goal is to be free from money. I want to be able to pursue exactly what God calls me to do and not be stuck at a job because I am living paycheck to paycheck and am trapped. Wherever I work, it will be because I WANT to work there not because I HAVE to.

The reason why it is important to know the reason for what you do is because it aids in your insight for your financial life. For instance, when a decision comes up you can ask yourself does it push me towards this goal or away from this goal. I have had to make some significant financial decisions over the past few months and I cannot tell you how helpful it is to know the reason behind your plan.
