Getting Things Done
By admin | May 27, 2008
Hope everyone had a good memorial day, refreshed and ready to go for the week. I have been thinking on the area of productivity. I have talked about some of these before but I wanted to give some ways that I have learned to help me stay productive.
Why is productivity important? I find that in my own life that if I am not productive I feel burden and stress on me. I would say that it can go without saying that those emotions are not welcomed in our lives.
Here are some helpful things that I use in my daily life to stay out of the trap of being overwhelmed with the to do list:
1.) Going to bed/Waking up - I find that for me night time hours are not good hours. They are goofing off hours and end up ruining my next day because I end up watching too much TV (and will stay up later than I should). When I read before I go to bed then wake up the next morning on time the rest of my day is that much better.
2.) Focus on Now - Recently I have tried to put this in my life because I am definitely a person who likes to see a plan and be aware of the point that I am in within the plan, but still have sight of the whole plan. However, I have noticed that it hurts life to do this ALL the time. When I used to hang out with my fiance I had in the back of my head all that was still left that needed to be accomplished. It would ruin my time with her and would not be able to utilize the small amount of time together. Now, I have tried to “be present” and have 100% of my attention in the moment.
I know have breakdowns within my day. There is a set aside time for planning and strategy with my time then the rest of it I spend being “present.”
3. Cut it in half - If you have a full schedule prioritize and focus on ONE important thing. Do not let the whole list overwhelm you and try to do less. I am not saying be irresponsible, but I am saying that as humans we have a tendancy to overwhelm ourselves when it is not necessary. Focus on knocking out just one important thing a day and you’ll be lessed stressed out and enjoy your days so much more.
4. Plan 5 goals - I am big on goal setting because I believe it is a neccessary element for planning. We have to know what we are aiming at in order to fire. If you do not have goals it is difficult to feel productive or that you are accomplishing anything. Write down 5 attainable things in life and plan accordingly to knock them out. It could be writing a blog, finish a home improvement project, write a few letters to friends, etc. Write down things that you would not normally accomplish unless you zero in on them but things that you really want to do.
5. Cut out the Clutter - Clutter is like kryptonite for me. I cannot do well in an environment that is cluttered. Chances are if you do not enjoy your workspace it might need some de-cluttering action. Even if it is just a shelf or your desktop, keeping it free from clutter will effect your mood in a positive way.
6. Set aside Music Time - If you are a person who LOVES music, set aside some time and let it resonate in you. Listening to good music can be a powerful tool to release stress from life.
7. Try a walk - Go for a walk and enjoy what you see. Don’t allow yourself to think of an overwhelming amount of tasks, just be present and actually enjoy the walk.
8. Zero in on a few projects - Focusing on 3 projects or less at a time can have a tremendous effect on your productivity and life. If you choose your 3 most important projects and focus on getting them to completion and excluding other projects you will be amazed how much you accomplish.
