    Lessons from Clemson Basketball

    By admin | February 5, 2009

As many know Clemson just beat Duke last night 74-47.  This could be argued as one of the best wins in Clemson basketball history.  How did the program get to this point?

Oliver Purnell.  He took over a team that could not make the NCAA tournament (and for that matter the NIT as well).  There honestly was little hope.  Clemson fans’ two favorite sports were football and football recruiting.

In the 2003-2004 Season Clemson was 10-18 (that means 10 wins 18 losses).  It was a joke unfortunately.  But when Purnell took it over, take a look at the minor (but steady) improvement.

    2004 - 10 Wins 18 Losses (4-14 in the ACC)
    2005 - 16 Wins 16 Losses (5-12 in the ACC)
    2006 - 19 Wins 13 Losses (7-10 in the ACC)
    2007 - 25 Wins 11 Losses (7-10 in the ACC)
    2008 -24 Wins 10 Losses (12-7 in the ACC)
2009 - 19 Wins 2 Losses (5-2 in the ACC) so far this year

Purnell took a program who he knew what to expect.  Each year he continued to build it better and better each year.  There was no quick fix.

If you are out of control in anything in life, there is no quick fix.  If you are in a situation you do not want to be in, there is no quick fix.  If you are in a financial mess, there is no quick fix…but there is hope.  It may seem silly but look at Clemson basketball, it was bleak times five years ago.  Even though there is no quick fix it is great looking back five years from now and be able to say, “I can’t believe how far I have been brought.”  God gets glory from this, He is the one that brings you there (I’m talking about in life, not basketball).

Remember, whatever situation you are in that you want out of, you didn’t get in it over night and you won’t get out of it over night.  There is no quick fix…but there is hope.
