My Own Worst Enemy
By admin | October 28, 2008
Many people think that I am a tight-wad. Unfortunately, this is not the case because I am a MAJOR spender and I am compulsive by nature. This is a bad combination if you didn’t already know.
I am not too familiar with diets (so I’m sure I’ll get a corrective e-mail or two if I don’t get it right) but when you are on a diet I believe you are allowed to everyone once in a while “splurge.” Day in and day out you’re living on salad & rice then one day you are allowed to get a delicious cheeseburger from five guys.
I imagine for those on a diet, the knowledge of this “splurge day” makes them able to persevere through the salad and rice days.
I think the same is true with me and spending. I think you know where I am going here. One day a year I unleash the beast, and that day i…BLACK FRIDAY.
The day after Thanksgiving (or Black Friday as some call it) is the biggest shopping day of the year. I used to work in the mall during high school so I usually had to work this day and began to dislike it, however, no longer do I have these sentiments.
I set aside money every month in an ING Direct account leading up to this grand day. Me and wifey have some “family purchases” that we plan on making which we are both looking forward to. My wife has “delayed pleasure” by using a laptop so old that she has to schedule her day around opening a file. Wake up: turn computer on…on hour later: click on folder…lunch time: come home from work to double click on file…by the time she gets home from work she can now type something in world.
So needless to say, one thing on the list is a family computer (she wants a PC…sorry funny mac commercials)
On Thanksgiving, during the time when everyone is relaxing with the football game on, I will then “get to work.” I bring every piece of advertisement that was in the newspaper for that day and start compiling data. I have a budget to work with and then I start deciding what fun electronics I will purchase tomorrow. It is like a coach burning the midnight oil tweaking his game plan for the next game. I plan out what time I will hit the store, the order in which they will be hit, and create a strategy to maximize my deal making ability. Then the next day (just like in sports) the execution is just as important as the plan. I get out there with my strategy and go go go. Then once noon hits I cannot wait to celebrate my recent victory at Chick-fil-a and think how I can’t wait til next year again.
