Phillies
By admin | October 27, 2008
I am a Philadelphia native and I have stayed true to the city’s sports franchises since moving. I LOVE the Phillies. Have loved them even during the Atlanta Braves long run on division championships (leaving the Phillies out every year).
But not this year. This year is different. Sure, it has been fun having 2 out of the last 3 mvps on your favorite team. It has been fun getting to see the Phillies have one of the biggest comebacks last year, making up a huge lead that the Mets had a week before the season ended.
But all that could be argued to be meaningless without a World Series Championship. Well, as most of you know, the Phillies are up 3-1 in the W.S. and looking like major favorites to close this thing out.
The way the Phillies have turned their franchise around in just a few short years by building their team the right way.
Rather than spending money to bring in free agent hitters (i.e. Jim Thome) they made a decision they were going to develop their home grown talent (draft and farm system…Hamels, Howard, Utley, Rollins). And then they pieced together a studly bull-pen to hold leads (Phillies are the best post-7 th inning team in baseball).
This takes major planning to orchestrate it all but it is worth it when you get to days like today.
What does this have to do with ANYTHING related to finances right?
The Phillies made a plan and stuck with it. They didn’t say, “we’re just going to play and see what happens.” They had meetings, they had decisions, they spent time thinking and planning. In pro baseball if you don’t have a plan, you WILL NOT win.
The same is true with our money. How many people DO NOT HAVE A PLAN?
Some even make excuses to me and say, “planning is not my style, I am a free spirit.” It’s not a style thing, its a wise/unwise thing. I should be more bold…it is a smart/stupid thing.
Nobody wants to go sky diving and say, “Oh, I don’t wear parachutes, thats not my style.” The reason why people don’t say that is because its stupid. It’s not a style thing.
The core of everything that I teach is to Make A Plan. Spend your money on purpose. Make decisions. Think about your financial condition.
I for one am glad the Phillies made a plan, and I want to encourage us all to learn a thing or two.
GO PHILLIES!
